David Gongwe Mhando, who holds a PhD (Area Studies) from Kyoto University, Japan, is a Associate Research Professor at the Collage of Social Sciences and Humanities, Sokoine University of Agriculture. Prof. Mhando has researched and published on rural livelihood, especial small holder’s coffee growers in Kilimanjaro region, Mbinga District in Ruvuma region and Mbozi District in Mbeya region. Among consultancies and researches he has conducted and published include: coffee value chain and warehouse receipt systems in Kilimanjaro and Ruvuma regions; cassava value chains in Coast region; feasibility study on introduction of Biogas technology in Mbinga and Mbozi Districts; small holder’s dairy farmers in Njombe Region (value chains) and climate Change adaptation among small holders in Mbinga and Nyasa Districts in Ruvuma region, Tanzania.. Prof. Mhando is also involved in research on orange and spices production and marketing in Tanga and Morogoro regions, respectively. Prof. Mhando’s teaching and research interests focus on value chain analysis, rural development and livelihood strategies, farmer’s institutions (groups and cooperatives), group’s dynamics (formations and management). Currently, he is a National Coordinator of two JICA’s funded projects in Tanzania as well as a research team member of the Timber Rush project in Sothern Highlands, funded by DANIDA.

This study investigated why coffee growers in Mbinga District, Tanzania, have persistently continued to cultivate coffee amidst decrease in coffee price and increase in production costs. It also examines the limits for as well as possible alternatives for diversification to reduce risk associated with challenges of coffee production.

This study assessed how WRS has developed transparent and efficient marketing system within the framework of a liberalized market to increase benefit and income of smallholder coffee producers. Specifically, this study assessed, firstly, how WRS has assisted farmers to access credits from formal financial institutions and promote the establishment of their own organisations. Secondly, examined understanding and accessibility of WRS among small-scale farmers. Thirdly, assessed how the use of WRS has assisted small scale farmers to increase their income and alleviate poverty. Lastly, assessed how farmers have managed to avoid trick and cheats done by unfaithful PCBs who offered them low prices, regardless of the higher price fetched at the auction

This study was a detailed diagnostic analysis of the value chain, beginning with an overview of the Tanzanian coffee industry. It introduces the value chain participants and explains its functioning. The study provides an analysis of the institutional and governance framework it examines returns to chain actors from different economic activities

2.6.6. Mhando, D. G (2014). Unstable Local Producer’s Institutions and Failure to Utilize Competitive Factor: The Case of the Tanzania Coffee Industry

This study was conducted during Post-Doctoral Programme, financed by the Japanese Society for Promotional of Science, (JSPS) at Kyoto University, between 2011 and 2013. The main objective was to examine the challenges facing Tanzanian Institutional in utilising our competitive factor in Global Coffee Industry.

2.6.7 BIO- FEASIBILITY/MARKET INTELLIGENCE STUDY FOR 4S@SCALE PROGRAMME IN TANZANIA

The main objective of this study was to determine socio-economic feasibility and market potential for installation of bio-digesters and utilisation of bio-slurry among coffee farmers. Specifically, the study aimed at determining; the demographic and socio-economic profile (family composition, income source, farm area, major crops, number of coffee trees and area under coffee, coffee production and sales); on farm diversification potentials of biogas plant; the household energy source for cooking, heating and lighting; the potential for installation of bio-digesters; the manure management practice in the area as related to chemical fertilisers; the relevant actor landscape in relation to bio-gas digesters; the relevant business enterprise (micro and small) landscape for marketing, installation and quality assurance possibilities for bio-digesters; the relevant landscape of financing institutions such as local SACCOs, MFIs and MFBs, groups; the cost of installing bio-digesters compared to the benefits from energy and bio-slurry application
