Research projects

• Research team member for project titled “Towards Increasing Sunflower Production in Tanzania in Singida and Simiyu Regions. The research is funded under by the government of Tanzania through SUA Research and Innovation Support (SUARIS) Competitive Research and Innovation Grants – 2022 – 2024

• Principal Investigator (PI) project titled “Analysis of Electronic Waste Management Practices in Tanzania: The Case of Dar es Salaam Region. The research is funded under by the government of Tanzania through SUA Research and Innovation Support (SUARIS) Competitive Research and Innovation Grants – 2022 – 2024

• Research team member for project titled “Timber Rush – Private forest on village land”. This was a 5-year research project (March 2016 – February 2021) implemented by Sokoine University of Agriculture (in Tanzania) in collaboration with Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denman (MFA). Under this project I am responsible with the value chain work package

• Research team member responsible with outreach work package for project titled “Integrated Agri-Aquaculture in Tanzania”. This project was under the Building Stronger Universities in Developing Countries (BSU): “Knowledge Sharing, Research Dissemination and Communication Programme: 2014-2015. The project was funded by DANIDA. Other collaborators were: The Technical University of Denmark, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Dar es Salaam

• Research team member for project titled “Enhancing climate change adaptation and mitigation capacities of vulnerable communities in eco-villages of different ecosystems of the Uluguru Mountains” Project was funded by European Union (EU) 2012 – 2014

• Research team member for project titled “Improvement of banana production in Mkuyuni and Matombo Divisions”. The project was funded by JICA through AICAD in 2011 – 2012

Consultancies

• May – September 2022: Country team member contracted by ITAD, a UK based consulting firm, to conduct Retrospective policy evaluation as part of the Gates Foundation’s Evaluating Inclusive Transformation in Agriculture (EVITA) framework to understand when, how, and why some policy reforms are successfully implemented. The results of the evaluation will inform the way the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) develops future policy strategy and program decisions. Specifically, the evaluation focuses on two policies i) Monitoring and Analyzing Food and Agriculture Policies (MAFAP), implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and ii) Micro Reforms for African Agribusiness (MIRA), implemented by the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
• August – September 2022 Lead consultant: Provided technical assistants to 29 Agricultural Tutors from 29 Agricultural Training Institutes to prepare a compendium/training manual on Agricultural Extension. The developed compendium is used as a teaching and learning resource to both tutors and students. This work was commissioned to me by Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT).
• July – August 2022: Lead consultant for Training on Agricultural Extension. Provided five (5) days training to 29 Agricultural Tutors from 29 Agricultural Training Institutes. The main objective of the training was to equip them with knowledge and skills on Agricultural Extension to enhance their effectiveness in delivering the Agricultural Extension curriculum to students who are pursuing certificate and diploma in Agriculture. This work was commissioned to me by Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT).
• June – August 2021: Team Member – Qualitative Study to Document Lessons and Challenges Drawn from the project titled “Enhancing Competitiveness of Smallholder Rice Farmers (ECSR)” in Morogoro. I conducted Focus Group Discussions and Key Informant Interviews to complement data from ECSR Project reports and carried out analyses of data and participated in preparing three leaning pieces on (i) Post-Harvest Management Technologies for Smallholder Rice farmers Financing PHT/PHP, (ii) Public versus Private Warehouses and their utility to Smallholder farmers and (iii) Financing Post-Harvest Technologies and Management Practices in Kilombero, Malinyi and Ulanga. The Study was funded by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF – Tanzania).
• November- December 2016: Lead consultant – Enhance Local actors’ engagement in collecting, analyzing and disseminating/Reporting of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (GEWE) data to facilitate the implementation of SDGs. Commissioned by Tanzania Gender Networking Program. The report titled “Current experiences and challenges in-terms of mechanisms to track local data in Agriculture sector to inform the Implementation of SDGs” was submitted to the client. I also presented the findings at the National Stakeholders workshop to stimulate National Dialogue on SDGs.
• May – June 2015: Team member – A study of Farmer Managed Seed Systems in Tanzania – Their Operation, Benefits, Success, Challenges and Support. Commissioned by Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM)
• November 2014 – February 2015: Team Member – A baseline assessment of the European Union – Accompanying Measures Sugar Protocol (2011 – 13) Countries in project areas of Kilombero, Ruembe, Mtibwa, Moshi and Kagera in Tanzania. Commissioned by the Sugar Board of Tanzania (SBT); Tender No. PA/096/2014-2015/CS/01
• April – June 2014: Team member – Assessing Out-growers Scheme Model for Developing Smallholder Farmers in Tanzania. Commissioned by the Network of Farmer Organizations (MVIWATA). The Out-grower schemes where the study was conducted are The Rice Out-grower Scheme under the Kilombero Plantations Limited and Kilombero Sugar Out-grower Scheme.
