Goodluck Dastan Massawe

Professional Biography

Dr Goodluck Massawe holds a PhD in Development Studies, a Postgraduate Diploma in Poverty Analysis for Socio-economic Security and Development, a Master’s degree in Development Practice specializing in Planning for Social Development, and a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science. Goodluck has more than 18 years of working experience in research, consultancy, training and community development work. Over the previous recent 10 years, Goodluck has been working as a Lecturer, Researcher and Consultant with the Department of Policy, Planning and Management at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Tanzania. He teaches several courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students including Development Planning; Managing Development Projects and Poverty Analysis. Before joining SUA, he worked for one year as an Agricultural Tutor with the Ministry of Agriculture Training Institute (MATI) at Naliendele, Mtwara. Goodluck also worked for six years as a Research Scientist with the Tanzania Livestock Research Institute (TALIRI). During his time at TALIRI, he performed other administrative tasks such as heading the Institute’s Social-economic Department and serving as the Institute’s Planning and Budgeting Officer. Before joining TALIRI, Goodluck started his career working as a Child Ministry Project Director for a community development project implemented by Compassion International-Tanzania in partnership with Kondoa Lutheran Church. Goodluck has strong research and job interest in areas of Social Planning in Development, Monitoring and Evaluation of Development Projects, Farming Systems and Rural Livelihoods Analysis, and Policy Analysis.

Academic Qulification

i.Goodluck was awarded a PhD in Development Studies in 2017 by the National University of Ireland (University College Dublin) in the Ireland Republic. His PhD thesis was written on ‘Farming System and Household Food Security: A Case of Kishapu and Mvomero Districts in Tanzania.
ii.In 2013, he was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Poverty Analysis for Socio-Economic Security and Development by the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam in The Hague, Netherlands.
iii.In 2010, he graduated from the University of Queensland in Australia and was awarded a Master’s degree in Advanced Development Practice (MDP) where he specialized in Planning for Social Development.
iv.Likewise, Goodluck graduated from the University of Pretoria-South Africa in 2007 and was awarded a Certificate in Livestock Production Systems (specializing in cattle and small stock).
v.Besides the postgraduate academic qualifications, Goodluck has a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science (2005) from Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania.

Research Projects

i.2022-2023, Team Member, SUA Research and Innovation Support (SUARIS) Funded Project, ‘Rapid assessment of environmental flow for sustainable planning of water resources management in the Lower Rufiji River’. The Project is being implemented in Pwani, Lindi, and Morogoro Regions of Tanzania.
ii.2010 – 2011, Team Member, Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Fund (ZARDEF) Funded Project, ‘Upscaling of Improvement of Tanzania Short-horned Zebu by Using Mpwapwa Breed Bulls to Increase Milk and Meat production’. The project was implemented in Dodoma and Singida Regions of Tanzania by Tanzania Livestock Research Institute
iii.2010 -2011, Team Member in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development Funded Project, ‘Breeding and Use of Improved Management Practices for Optimum Utilization of Tanzania shorthorn Zebu (TSZ) Cattle in Central Tanzania’. The project was implemented in Dodoma and Singida Regions of Tanzania by Tanzania Livestock Research Institute.
iv.2013-2016, Team Member in the Irish AID Funded AGRIDIET Project, How can agriculture contribute to better nutrition? Developing an evidence base in Tanzania. The project was implemented in Kishapu and Mvomero Districts in Tanzania by Sokoine University of Agriculture, St. Augustine University of Tanzania & University College Dublin in Ireland.
v.2011-2012, Team Leader, Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Fund (ZARDEF) Funded Project, ‘Hides and skin value chain: Improvement in the hides and skin value chain for marketing and access to capital’. The project was implemented in Handeni and Kilindi Districts of Tanzania by Tanzania Livestock Research Institute.
