David Gongwe Mhando, who holds a PhD (Area Studies) from Kyoto University, Japan, is an Associate Research Professor and Head, Department of Policy Planning and Management and Deputy Principal at the Collage of Social Sciences and Humanities, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). From 2005-2011, he was the head of socio-economy section at the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SCSRD), at SUA. Prof. Mhando has researched and published on rural livelihoods, especially smallholder coffee growers in Kilimanjaro, Ruvuma and Songwe regions as well as on timber, and cassava value chains. Among consultancies and researches that he has conducted and published include: Social Economics and Livelihoods Diversification after Economic Liberalisation in Mbinga District, Ruvuma Region; coffee value chain in Kilimanjaro, Ruvuma and Songwe regions and Warehouse Receipt Systems in Ruvuma Region. In 2017, Prof Mhando was contracted by the Tanzanian Coffee Board to conduct a Midterm Evaluation of the 2011-2021 Tanzanian Coffee Development Strategy. Furthermore, in 2018, Prof Mhando, as the national coffee expert, participated in the EU funded study on Coffee Value Chain Analysis which was conducted in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Likewise, Prof Mhando has conducted Baseline Survey and Stakeholders Mapping for Smallholder Coffee Development Project (CODE-P) in Ruvuma, Mbeya, and Songwe Regions. In addition, Prof Mhando has conducted studies on feasibility study on introduction of Biogas Technology in Mbinga and Mbozi districts; smallholder dairy farmers in Njombe Region and climate change adaptation among smallholder farmers in Mbinga and Nyasa Districts in Ruvuma region, Tanzania. Prof. Mhando was also involved in the research on orange and spices production and marketing in Tanga and Morogoro regions, respectively. Currently, he is a research team member of the Timber Rush project conducted in the Sothern Highlands of Tanzania, funded by DANIDA. Besides, he is an advisor of a British funded project, titled Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture as Green Infrastructure implications on well-being and sustainability in the Global South, jointly implemented by Open University of Tanzania and University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. Prof. Mhando’s teaching and research interests is focused on Socio-economics and Rural livelihoods strategies, rural-urban linkages, value chain analysis, rural development, farmers’ institutions (groups and cooperatives societies), group’s dynamics (formations and management). Apart from supervising undergraduate and post graduate students in research, Professor Mhando is also an internal examiner of MA dissertations and PhD Thesis at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), and external examiner at University of Dar Es Salaam (UDSM), and Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU).
