Definitions and concepts of poverty; History of poverty; Monetary and non-monetary indicators of poverty; Causes and consequences of poverty; Global, regional and national distribution of poverty; Poverty determination; Participatory Poverty Assessment (PPA); Policies and strategies to reduce poverty (NPES, HIPC, PRS, NSGRP, TAS, JAS, MTEF, PER, PMS); Various ways of reducing poverty; the role of agriculture in poverty reduction; Designing, implementation, supervision, monitoring, and evaluation of poverty reduction interventions; Processes of consultation and decision-making; Empowerment for poverty reduction at different levels (personal, community, and national); Decentralized governance and management: participation at the grass roots, political versus managerial control, improving performance in local government, central and local governments relationships; Local government and community development; Dealing with governance and participation issues within the PRS; Improved opportunities and security: Interventions that improve the opportunities of the poor principally by improving individual and household assets (human, financial, physical, and social) and reducing the insecurity and overall vulnerability of the poor; Use of the sustainable livelihood approach as a key analytical framework.
