Introduction to agriculture and rural development, agriculture in the context of sustainable rural development, approaches to rural development, rural institutions and the state; structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs), macro-economic linkages and agriculture, environmental degradation, Climate change and review of local and regional agricultural policies, programs and strategies, institutional arrangement and agricultural development
Learning Outcomes:

Students upon successful completion of the course will be able to:

  • understand basic principles of rural development
  • Describe major and minor strands in debates on agriculture and development 
  • Apply knowledge gained for critical analysis of agricultural development initiatives in Tanzania and other Sub-Saharan African
  • Evaluate institutional and political facts related to the evolution of agricultural policies
